Volunteering for Ramp Duty at Tulista Boat Launch

 Why?

  • Sidney Anglers has an agreement with the Town of Sidney

  • We agree to volunteer at the ramp every weekend from May 24'th long weekend
    to Labour Day long weekend

  • We man the ramp every Saturday and Sunday as well as Mondays on a long weekend

  • For our efforts The Town of Sidney shares the launch ramp fee receipts with our club

  How?

  • Volunteering for ramp duty is quite simple

  • The manning requirement is two people per shift from 9 am to 1 pm

  • Many people team up with a buddy but it is not a requirement

  • To sign up simply go to sidneyanglers.ca and follow the link for ramp duty at the bottom of the page

  • Sign in with your email address and pick your desired dates and times

  • If you have a buddy you can also sign up for them if they want you to

  • Just log out and log back in with your buddy's email and enter the dates and times

  • Terry Russell does a great job of managing this site and can usually be reached by email if you need assistance

  • Coordinate with your buddy or other member who will be sharing duty with you

  • Our sign and equipment are stored at Home Hardware on Beacon Avenue in Sidney

  • The store opens at 9 am but usually someone will be there a little before

  • The staff there is very helpful and will either get the stuff for you or show you where it is stored

  • A system that works well is one picks up the gear and the other returns it OR If you are volunteering on Sunday go to
the ramp on Saturday before 1 pm and pick the gear from those people the same idea for a Monday long weekend

Where?

  • When you arrive at the ramp park along the fence

  • Usually a young volunteer DFO creel census person will already be parked there

  • You and your partner will have room to park behind them, again along the fence and out of the way

  • Set up the sandwich board sign and put on a vest from the ones in our gear bucket

What?

  • The tool box should have tide books to hand out

  • Recommend you bring a folding chair and sun umbrella

  • Also recommend sunscreen a hat and sunglasses and lunch

  • Remember you are there to help if needed.

  • We do not collect parking fees, that is handled by Robins at the kiosk across from the ramp

  • You can point out alternate parking if needed and as indicated on the map in the tide book

  • It gets very busy at the ramp some days

  • Traffic can become an issue on the ramp and that is one area where you can be very helpful by directing traffic

  • Another area to assist is making sure people get their boat and gear ready before time and not on the ramp

  • Some people will ask for help securing their boat to the dock while passengers load and unload

  • Some people have absolutely no idea how to launch and retrieve a boat and they will be obvious,
do what you can to assist but don't do it for them.

This document is meant to be a guide and cannot possibly be all inclusive of every conceivable situation that may arise.
The main thing is to have fun, help people out when needed and promote the club when the opportunity presents itself.

Thank you for volunteering for Ramp Duty and by doing so you will become eligible for a nice prize to be drawn at the AGM in November.
